A shadow box fence mounts its boards on alternating sides of the rails. From either yard the fence looks the same, so nobody ends up with the back side of the fence facing them.
Head-on, the overlapping boards screen most of the view. At an angle you can see a little through, and breezes slip between the boards, which keeps the fence from feeling like a solid wall. Lattice toppers can be added for a decorative top edge.

A privacy fence has solid, interlocking boards on one plane. A shadow box fence alternates boards on both sides of the rails, so it looks the same from both yards and lets some air through.
Does a vinyl shadow box fence need maintenance?
Very little. There is nothing to paint or stain; wash it with a hose and mild soap when it gets dusty.
