What Florida’s Pool Barrier Law Requires
Florida’s Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act (Chapter 515, Florida Statutes) sets the barrier rules for residential pools. Under section 515.29, a pool barrier must:
- Be at least 4 feet high, measured on the outside
- Have no gaps, openings, indentations or protrusions a young child could use to crawl under, squeeze through or climb over
- Use gates that open outward, away from the pool, and are self-closing and self-latching, with the latch release on the pool side where a young child can’t reach it
- Sit far enough from the water’s edge that a child who gets past it won’t fall straight into the pool
A wall of your house can count as part of the barrier only if it has no door or window that opens onto the pool. Your city or county building department and your HOA can add their own requirements, so we plan the fence and gates around the rules for your property.
Popular in: Cheval, Riverview, Land O’ Lakes, New Tampa. We build this style across Hillsborough and Pasco counties.

Pool Fences That Look Good Too
A pool fence doesn’t have to look like a barricade. We build pool code fences in vinyl privacy and picket styles, so the fence around your pool matches the rest of your yard and never needs paint near the water.
Recent work includes poolside privacy fencing and gates in Land O’ Lakes.

FAQ
Vinyl Pool Fence FAQs
How tall does a pool fence have to be in Florida?
Florida Statute 515.29 requires a residential pool barrier to be at least 4 feet high on the outside. Local codes and HOAs can require more.
Does a pool gate have to be self-closing?
Yes. Under 515.29, pool gates must open outward away from the pool and be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch release on the pool side out of a young child’s reach.
Do I need a permit for a pool fence?
Pool barriers are usually reviewed as part of a pool permit, and a fence may need its own permit depending on whether you are in the City of Tampa, unincorporated Hillsborough or Pasco County, or another city. Check with your local building department before work starts.
